Spartacus Workout: Failed Commitments

So, starting a difficult month-long workout program two weeks before my best friend from Virginia arrived may not have been a great idea. I did one workout while Stilts was here, and then I’ve been coasting ever since.

I even dropped a workout the week before, as Sedagive? and I carpooled to work and I didn’t plan very well.

I had seven workouts left, and I am afraid any progress my body made in adjusting to the Spartacus / Andy Whitfield routine will be undone by taking so much time off.

In the meantime, here’s what I was eating in the morning to keep my body up to the task of the gladiator show-inspired circuit workout.


Protein shake recipe

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 2 scoops protein powder
  • 6 1″ slices of banana
  • 2/3 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 teaspoon of creatine
  • 2 tablespoons of wheat germ

Total grams of protein: 56g
Total grams of fiber: 10g
Total grams of sugar: 34g
Total grams of fat: 6.5g
Total calories: 509 calories


In order to get some more fiber in my diet I have a serving of oatmeal with some cranberries in it.

Oatmeal receipe

  • 1/2 cup whole oatmeal
  • 1/3 cup Craisins

Total grams of protein: 5g
Total grams of fiber: 7g
Total grams of sugar: 27g
Total grams of fat: 3g
Total calories: 280 calories

Now, what’s really interesting to me is the high amount of sugar I’m ingesting — 61g of sugar, almost double what this Livestrong article recommends. There is no “official” FDA recommendation, but 40g is a well circulated daily limit.

Things get a little more complicated because the sugar comes from fruit sources. This type of sugar gets rapidly metabolized but does not have the systemic side effects that come from high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. So that doesn’t seem super terrible, except that both sides of my family have a history of Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes.

I’ll probably wind up cutting out the bananas once I eat the ones I’ve already purchased.

In the meantime, I’m back on my schedule, with six workouts remaining by the time you read this.
