Inexpensive Euro EFFECTS EFX LED motorcycle lights review

Motorcycle gear and accessories are a funny thing. What might be inexpensive in the automotive or boating world is much more expensive when the label “motorcycle” is applied to the same product. This happens a lot with things like waterproof switches, fuse blocks, and auxiliary lights.
Now, motorcycle auxiliary lights come in one of two [...]

Is an SSD worth it? I put my laptop to the test

I picked up an Acer Aspire 5740 laptop a few weeks ago. Thanks to the forums over at Ars Technica I considered purchasing a Solid State Drive (SSD) to replace the traditional hard drive. Based on their recommendations, I picked up the Intel G2 X25M 80GB Mainstream SSD. The sale price was $220, down from [...]

Getting My Wings Back

I rode my motorcycle to work for eight consecutive months last year. I was hoping to ride a little later into the season last year and start a little earlier this year. My 2009 Yamaha FJR1300A is more suited for all-year riding, thanks to its full faring and tall, adjustable windshield.
Unfortunately we had some [...]

iPazzPort Wireless USB HTPC Computer Remote Control First Impressions Review

About a month and a half ago I wrote about the HDE wireless USB infrared remote control that I bought for my home theater personal computer (HTPC). If you haven’t read that review yet, here’s the short story: it sucked.
My dissatisfaction with the remote led me to buy the Lenovo wireless multimedia remote with [...]

PSA: Use your instant messaging program with Facebook chat

Funny how Facebook has become the Switzerland of instant messaging among my friends. Some of us were on AIM, some were on Yahoo! Instant Messenger, and some were holdouts on ICQ. Before, in the ICQ/YIM/AIM days, the client and the protocol were the same thing. If you wanted to talk to someone on YIM, you [...]

Maverick 88 Pump Shotgun Review

The Maverick 88 shotgun by Mossberg is an exceptional value for a basic 12-gauge pump shotgun. It may not have all the bells and whistles of other pump shotguns, but for $177 plus taxes and fees it's hard to go wrong with the Maverick 88.

IOGear 3-Port HDMI Switch with Remote Review

Here’s a nice problem to have: too many high-definition doo-dads and not enough high-definition ports on your television. That’s the situation I was facing on both of my televisions. I have FiOS TV, an Xbox 360 and an HTPC on both sets. I have two HDMI ports on my upstairs TV, and my downstairs television [...]

R.I.P., Melitta Fast Brew Coffee Machine

After about three and a half years of heavy usage, my Melitta Fast Brew coffee maker finally bit the dust. I noticed a few days ago that the coffee wasn’t as hot as usual. That was a bad sign, especially since I put the finished coffee directly into a glass-lined Thermos air pot to stave [...]

How Many 90 Year Olds Can You Take In a Fight Quiz

In the spirit of the “How many five year olds can you take in a fight” quiz I wrote about almost two years ago, The Accountant™ passed along the “how many 90 year olds can you take in a fight” quiz.
Some new rules apply here versus the original:

Everyone is ambulatory (no wheelchairs)
Everyone is wearing [...]

Acer Aspire AS5740 i5 Laptop First Impressions Review

Overall, I like the Acer Aspire 5740. I think it's a great value for an i5-based laptop. If you are a casual user, this laptop will probably serve you well for years to come -- if Acer's build quality holds. It has plenty of RAM, horsepower, and storage to meet the needs of most users. It is lacking some high-range amenities, like a Blu-Ray drive, 8GB of RAM, or discrete graphics, but then again some things have to be cut to make the $600 price point.
