Music You Need to Own: Malbec by Samples

“Music You Need to Own” is a little series I do about music I like. I like it so much that I put my money where my ears are, and give away a digital copy of the album to one of my readers.

Today I’ll be writing about “Malbec” by Colorado-area musician Samples.

Malbec is Samples’s latest album, and if I had to try to describe his style I would say it’s a cross between Glitch Mob (a previous MYNtO artist) and Daft Punk. If you liked the Tron: Legacy soundtrack and played a lot of Atari and Nintendo games as a kid you will love Samples. The album weighs in at ten tracks, with a typical track length of about three and a half minutes.

In describing the sound to my friends on Facebook, I wrote “This would be my soundtrack if I were digitized and forced to fight my way through a side scroller.” The beats are heavy, and Samples’s glitch technique provides the rhythm.

I like Samples’s Malbec album so much I’m giving away a copy of it on Wednesday, July 18th 2012. All you have to do to enter is make a comment on this post about an album that you really like to listen to right now. I’ll email the winner, so make sure you provide your actual email address when you leave your comment.

Good luck, and give Samples a listen!

Spitfire by Porter Robinson has been a solid album. It gets played regularly during my commute to and from work.

Rush – Chronicles. Big fan when I was younger and I’ve really enjoyed listening to all the songs from my youth lately.

I keep listening to The Dead Weather. Both Horehound and Sea of Cowards. If I had to pick one… I guess Horehound.
