Music You Need to Own: SkyWorld by Two Steps From Hell

Music You Need to Own is a segment where I like an album so much I put my money where my mouth is and buy it for one lucky reader.

Two Steps From Hell is the name of a musical group comprising of Nick Phoenix and Thomas J. Bergersen. They have made a TON of incredible music for movies and trailers. I bet you’ve heard some of their tracks before, but never knew who was behind the music. Even if you did, most of their music was only available to the film industry.

In 2010 the pair decided to release an album to the public entitled “Invincible.” They followed it up with another release in 2011 called “Archangel.” I loved both of them and bought them on Amazon.com.

There was some uncertainty if the group would continue to publish music for the public, but they released SkyWorld in late 2012. And it is awesome.

Two Steps From Hell SkyWorld Album Cover

The first two albums were epic in their own right. The music slanted more towards the fantasy / classical genres — think 300, Spartacus or Harry Potter.

SkyWorld is more of a sci-fi / fantasy album. Each track has that signature Two Steps From Hell sound, but there are more modern elements thrown in. There’s a touch of the sounds and techniques used in electronic music. It’s Two Steps From Hell in the future, and I really like how it sounds.

You can listen to a few samples on Amazon.com to see if it’s your kind of music. However, if you work out or play games you should buy at least one of Two Steps From Hell’s albums.

It’s a great soundtrack for your personal epic moments.

I bought it (and their other two albums) based on your recommendation, DrF. Ever since you recommended Skrillex’s Bangarang, I knew I’d enjoy anything you posted.

I think I posted this last time but don’t know if you ever got around to listening to it, but I highly recommend zircon’s newest album, Identity Sequence. It kicks a ton of ass IMO.

http://zirconstudios.bandcamp.com/album/identity-sequence – if you’re going to give any track a test listen, you MUST hit up ‘Colossus’.

Disclaimer: I was an Identity Sequence backer on Kickstarter so I did help fund it and get some goodies. But I like to think even if I hadn’t supported it, I’d still love it.

If you give it a whirl, let me know what you think!

Trailer music is a genre I’ve had an eye on for a little while now, but haven’t taken the plunge. So I will enter your contest! Currently spinning in my car stereo is Fair to Midland, a band I’d describe as progressive pop.

I tried listening to the radio on Monday… first time in several months. The only thing playing is Mumford & Sons. They were okay at first. They grew on me by 4:00 Monday, but after hearing them for the 8th time by Thursday morning I was sick of them. Thanks radio.

So for now I’m back to listening to iPod, Google Play or CDs. I just listened to Little Black Submarines by The Black Keys.
