Rock Band is going to make me buy an Xbox 360

Harmonix, creators of Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero II, have announced what will be the Xbox 360 killer app for me: Rock Band. The game, as the name suggests, allows you to sing, play the guitar, and bang on the drums with your friends in meatspace or online. There are plans to make new songs available for download from almost every major record label. There is no word yet on the pricing of the game, if GH peripherals are going to be compatible, or how much downloadable tracks will cost. It has been suggested that some tracks will be available for free, which is just plain awesome.

One of the more exciting features is that you can search for bandmates online. It will be possible to form a virtual band with people from all over the world. I think I just pulled a groin muscle while pounding out a massive thrust in excitement.

For more information, Gamespot has a lengthy interview with Harmonix’s Alex Rigopulos. Ben Kuchera from Ars Technica also interviewed Daniel Sussman, the producer of Rock Band.

Since you influenced my decision to give Eve a chance I’m glad you are getting a 360. I’ve enjoyed mine WAAAAAY more than I thought I would have.

Just an update that one of the Harmonix/Red Octane guys (don’t remember from which company it was), said that the Guitar Hero Xplorer controller WILL be compatible with Rock Band. There might be wireless guitars by that time hopefully.

Also, you might want to check out the 360 Elite that is launching at the start of May. It’s coming with the 120GB HDD which will be sold for ~$180USD separately and might be something that could influence your purchase if you are interested in d/l large amounts of content from the Xbox Live! Marketplace.
