How to Assemble an IKEA Markus Office Chair Video

I have returned to sitting at my office desk. The main reason is so I can share the same space with Sedagive? — she’s significantly shorter than I am and my standing setup made it impossible for her to be near me. Our office area isn’t big enough for BOTH of us to have standing desks, so now we both sit next to each other.

Another reason is that we are going to fly a two-crew spaceship in Star Citizen. Gotta be close together!!

This all meant that I needed a new office chair. We buy a lot of our furniture at IKEA, and as such some assembly is required.

Many of my friends comment on how hard or frustrating it is to assemble IKEA furniture, so I’ve started filming instructional videos.

This how to video for the Markus office chair is my first attempt.

Overall, assembly was easy. It was hard to discern from the printed instructions which direction the seat pad was supposed to fit, so I wound up doing the seat control attachment part twice. Even accounting for my mistake and the extra effort to film the whole process it took me less than 20 minutes to assemble the chair.

There are a few things to be aware of:

  • The casters (wheels) have to be straight up and down to go into the star-shaped base. I saw a few reports online that the Markus’s wheels “don’t fit,” but the post has to be completely straight up and down to fit.
  • Get a friend to help you when you attach the chair back to the seat pan. If you are doing this solo, attach the top two bolts first, tighten them about 3/4 way, and then tilt the chair forward so you can get the last bolt in. You’ll see in the video.
